Chimney sweep in Elk River, MN Elk River chimney service, from Lower Town to the newer edges of the city

Elk River's downtown was platted in 1865, and the city's housing grew from 5,782 units in 2000 to 9,474 in 2020. So a chimney here may be very old or quite new. We sweep, inspect and repair chimneys of every age in 55330.

Early masonry near Lower Town

Elk River was platted in 1865 and became a village in 1881. Church buildings from 1881 and 1891 still stand, and the water tower dates to 1920. If your house or building comes from that early period, its chimney may have soft lime mortar and no clay liner, or a liner that has cracked.

Old brick needs a light touch. Hard modern mortar can trap water in soft brick, and the face of the brick then pops off in a freeze. Repairs on early chimneys should match the original mortar and change as little as possible. A camera check of the full flue comes first.

Growth since the 1990s

In the 1990s, Elk River was among the fastest-growing corridors in Minnesota. It added more than 3,600 housing units between 2000 and 2020. Homes from these decades often use factory-built fireplaces, metal flues or direct-vent gas units. Those need checks of the chase cover, the cap and the flue joints, plus regular chimney sweeping if you burn wood.

Two rivers, a lake and open land

The Elk River meets the Mississippi here, and a 1915 dam created Lake Orono. The 1978 merger with Elk River Township also brought rural land into the city. Chimneys on open lots and near water take more wind, rain and freeze-thaw. A tight cap, a sealed crown and sound flashing do most of the work of keeping water out.

Fall is the busy season

Fall is when most people remember the chimney. Book your sweep and inspection before the first cold night, not after it.

Elk River chimney questions, answered

How do I know if my older Elk River chimney has a liner?

Open the damper and shine a flashlight up the flue. Clay tile looks like square or round sections with joints between them. If you see bare brick, the flue may be unlined. A camera inspection confirms it along the full length.

I heat with wood on a rural Elk River lot. How often should the chimney be swept?

Have it checked every year, and swept when creosote builds to about 1/8 inch. If you burn wood all winter, that can mean more than one sweep a season. Shiny, crusty glaze in the flue is a sign it is overdue.
