Chimney sweep in Brooklyn Park, MN Brooklyn Park chimneys, from the boom years to the newest blocks

Brooklyn Park's population more than tripled in the 1950s and more than doubled again in the 1960s. Much of the land north of 85th Avenue was built after 2000. We sweep, inspect and repair chimneys in both halves of the city.

A village of 3,868 that kept growing

Brooklyn Park was settled in 1852 and named after Brooklyn, Michigan, by early settlers. It had only 3,868 people when it became a village in 1954. Then the boom came, and the city filled in fast through the 1960s.

Masonry chimneys on homes from that boom have now lived through a lot of winters. Check the crown, the mortar near the roofline and the metal flashing. A cracked clay liner is also common. It often shows up after a new furnace or water heater goes in, because newer units send cooler, wetter exhaust up the flue, and old tile does not handle that well.

North of 85th Avenue

Most land north of 85th Avenue was developed after 2000, and the city still has some farms and open land. Houses of this age often have factory-built fireplaces or gas units. Their weak spots are the chase cover, the cap, and the seal around the metal flue. Open land around a house means more wind, and wind pushes rain and snow into any gap.

Along the Mississippi

The Mississippi River forms the city's eastern boundary, past Coon Rapids Dam Regional Park. Brick that soaks up water in the fall cracks when that water freezes, and the face of the brick starts to flake. A chimney inspection catches this early, while sealing the crown or repointing a few joints can still fix it.

What we look at in Brooklyn Park

  • Crown, mortar and flashing on 1950s-60s chimneys
  • Flue liner check after a furnace or water heater swap
  • Chase covers and caps on post-2000 homes
  • Sweeping for wood fireplaces and stoves

Fall is the busy season

Fall is when most people remember the chimney. Book your sweep and inspection before the first cold night, not after it.

Common Brooklyn Park chimney questions

How can I tell if my 1950s or 1960s Brooklyn Park chimney needs repair?

Look for white stains on the brick, flaking brick faces, loose flashing, or bits of tile in the fireplace. Each of these points to water getting in. An inspection checks the crown and the full length of the liner.

My home north of 85th Avenue has a gas fireplace. Does it need a sweep?

It needs a yearly check more than a heavy sweep. The tech looks at the vent, the cap, the glass and the burner for soot or blockage. Birds and wasps like to nest in gas vents.
