Newport chimney sweep and inspections, a short hop from Cottage Grove

Newport sits along the Mississippi where I-494 meets US 10 and 61, just northwest of Cottage Grove. It is a small city with a long history, and its chimneys cover more than a century of building.

A town platted in 1857

Newport was platted in 1857, the same year its post office opened, and incorporated in 1889. The 2020 census counted 1,546 housing units. In a town that small and that old, one street can hold a house from before 1900, a post-war rambler and a recent build. We do not assume what kind of chimney you have until we see it.

What that mix means

  • Older masonry chimneys: check for a liner, cracked tiles and mortar that has washed out near the top.
  • Post-war ramblers: one brick chimney that may serve the fireplace, furnace and water heater, with the usual crown and flashing wear.
  • Newer homes: factory-built fireplaces and gas vents, where caps, chase covers and blocked vents are the common issues.

Near the highway and the river

Interstate 494 and US Routes 10 and 61 are Newport's main roads, and the Mississippi runs along its west side. Wind off the river valley can push rain sideways into a chimney with no cap. If you have water in the firebox after a storm, the cap and crown are the first places we look.

Good times to book in Newport

  • Before the first fire of fall
  • When you buy a home with a fireplace
  • After replacing the furnace or water heater
  • After a leak near the chimney

Newport chimney questions

How do I tell what kind of chimney my Newport house has?

A brick or stone stack on the outside usually means masonry. A wood- or siding-covered box with a metal cap on top usually means a factory-built fireplace with a metal chimney inside. Some houses have both, one for the fireplace and one for the furnace.

Why do I need a chimney cap?

A cap keeps rain, snow, leaves and animals out of the flue. Water entering through an uncapped flue rusts dampers and wears down mortar and liners from the inside.

Do you work in Newport and St. Paul Park on the same day?

Often, yes. Newport and St. Paul Park are next to each other along the river, both bordering the Cottage Grove area.
