Chimney sweep in Shakopee, MN Chimney care for Shakopee, from 1860s brick to brand-new subdivisions

We sweep, inspect and repair chimneys all over Shakopee. The city has red-brick houses from about 1865 near downtown and new neighborhoods still going up on its edges. Each kind of home needs a different kind of chimney care.

Red brick along the Minnesota River

Shakopee was platted in 1854 and is now the Scott County seat. Its first homes were simple red-brick houses. The Early Shakopee Houses on East 2nd Avenue date to about 1865 and are on the National Register. The Shakopee Historic District along the riverbank was listed in 1972.

Brick and mortar that old are soft. When a chimney like that needs repointing, the new mortar has to be softer than the brick, or the brick face starts to crack and flake. We look at the whole stack first, then fix only the joints and bricks that need it. If the flue has no liner, or the clay liner is broken, we talk through relining before you light a fire.

Three waves of growth, three kinds of chimneys

Shakopee's population jumped 63% in the 1950s. Homes from that decade often have masonry chimneys that also vent a furnace or water heater. When one of those appliances is replaced, the old flue can end up the wrong size. That can lead to condensation inside the chimney and damage you can't see from the yard.

The city grew again by 75% in the 1990s and 80% in the 2000s, after U.S. Highway 169 was moved in 1996 toward the Bloomington Ferry Bridge. Many homes from those years use factory-built fireplaces with metal chimneys inside a wood or siding chase. Those need a sound chase cover, a working cap and clean, tight pipe sections.

New homes still need a first look

Building continues in places like Highview Park, Summerland Place and Windermere South. A new gas fireplace or insert should still be checked once it has run for a season. We check the vent, the glass seal and the cap so small issues don't turn into big ones.

Shakopee chimney checklist

  • Soft mortar repair for 1860s red brick
  • Liner sizing after a furnace or water heater swap
  • Chase covers and caps on 1990s and 2000s homes
  • First-season checks on new gas fireplaces

Homes in the Shakopee Historic District or on the National Register may have rules for outside work. Ask the City of Shakopee before major masonry changes.

Fall is the busy season

Fall is when most people remember the chimney. Book your sweep and inspection before the first cold night, not after it.

Questions from Shakopee homeowners

Is an 1860s brick house in Shakopee safe to burn wood in?

It can be, but only after the flue is checked from top to bottom. Houses from that era often have no liner or a cracked one. We do a Level 2 inspection and tell you what it would take to use the fireplace safely.

My home in Southbridge or Canterbury was built after 1990. What should be checked?

Many homes from that period have a factory-built fireplace and a metal chimney. We look at the chase cover for rust and leaks, the cap, the firebox panels and the pipe joints. If you have a gas unit, we check the vent and glass seal too.
