Edina chimney service, from 1920s Tudors to postwar homes

Edina's Country Club District has 550 historic homes built mostly from 1924 to 1931, and the city grew fast again in the 1950s and 1960s. That gives Edina two very different kinds of chimneys. We sweep, inspect and repair both, with repairs matched to the age of the house.

Chimneys in the Country Club District

The Country Club Historic District has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1982. Its homes come in Colonial, Tudor, Georgian and Mediterranean Revival styles. In houses like these, the chimney is often a big part of the look, so repairs need to keep the brick, shape and joints looking right.

Chimneys from the 1920s were usually built with clay tile liners and mortar that is softer than modern mixes. Tile cracks with age and heat. If a hard modern mortar goes into old joints, the brick around it can spall in the freeze and thaw. We use softer mortar on old brick and keep each repair as small as the damage allows.

Morningside and the streetcar years

Edina's suburban growth began in Morningside in the early 1900s, when the city was a streetcar suburb. Houses from that time can be older than the Country Club homes. If a fireplace there has sat unused, have the flue checked before the first fire. Old flues collect debris and nests, and hidden cracks are common.

The 1950s and 1960s build-out

After World War II, Edina expanded as a car-centric suburb. Today it is more than 95% developed, mostly with homes. Chimneys from the postwar decades often need crown work, new flashing, or a liner after a furnace or water heater was replaced. A chimney inspection sorts out which one your house needs.

Edina chimney checklist

  • Camera check of 1920s clay tile liners
  • Repointing with mortar matched to original brick
  • Crown and cap work on postwar chimneys
  • Relining after a furnace or water heater swap

The Country Club District is on the National Register. Ask the City of Edina whether any exterior rules apply before you rebuild a chimney there.

Edina homeowners ask

Is the fireplace in my Country Club District home safe to use?

Have it inspected first. Clay tile liners from the 1920s often have cracks you cannot see from below. A Level 2 inspection sends a camera up the full flue so you know whether it needs cleaning, repair or a new liner.

Can a Tudor or Georgian chimney be rebuilt so it looks the same?

In most cases, yes. The goal is to match brick color and size, the joint width and the mortar color. Where only the top is damaged, rebuilding just that section keeps more of the original chimney.
